Domestic Violence and The Past

There comes a time in every writer's life where they have to get real and rather candid. Being a writer is being an artist with words and as an artist, one must be open to sharing a part of themselves from time to time.

I was inspired by a video I saw on Upworthy and while I gave a brief synopsis of my experience with the subject I felt that telling my story at length was the right thing to do as well as the lessons learned.

God Bless the Internet

God Bless the internet...why?

Because not only is it a wonderful collection of knowledge readily available to anyone after a few hits on a keyboard and a click or two here but it also features some rather strange things. Also, it is quite a distraction from getting anything done because once you click one thing, the sites post links to keep you clicking away, all the while they are keeping you plugged in and before you know it...three hours have gone by.

One such example of strangitude (yes I made that word up) is this lovely gem I found in my Facebook news feed, floating amongst the internet link debris that one finds on the home page.

http://gizmodo.com/any-animal-that-touches-this-lethal-lake-turns-to-stone-1436606506

This lovely gem was brought to my attention by another Facebook frequenter.

I figured, while I am not sharing art today, I can share an interesting link.

Here's my take on it: What it discusses is this particular lake that due to the pH balance of the water calcifies any animal that happens to have the misfortune of getting into it.

In short, the chemical make up turns the animals into stone.

What follows is a series of photographs taken of the lake's victims that are both hauntingly beautiful as well as crazily horrifying. Also, its sort of inspirational, like I feel like a movie idea could totally be made out of this rather strange phenomenon.

That's my opinion.

Let me know what you think.

The link features some photos but they are all from a book called Across the Ravaged Land.

DC Video Shoot Off May 2013

Sometime ago, I had talked about the DC Video Shoot Off I was participating in.

Today, I finally get around to posting a link of the video here.

Lessons Learned:

Often when someone is so sure they are good at something, put them in a different role that will challenge them. I won't elaborate too much on that lesson but it should be pretty self explanatory.

Even if you are rusty at this craft, dive right in anyways. I let my feelings of being unsure of my skills get in the way of some of my exploration into my craft.

Come to a consensus about what you want to be the absolute focus of the project, characters, etc before moving forward. Often we lose the original version whether we have lots of time (usually in our professional lives) and when we have very little time (as was the case in this shoot off).

When its time to take a breather, TAKE ONE! Burying yourself into a project regardless of a time crunch gets you no where. You only get more frustrated and locked in instead of exploring it. To be truthful, video and media are and can be art. With any work of art you have to allow the piece to unfold before your eyes, yes you start with a vision but most importantly listen and observe. Sometimes a "mistake" can be exploited. I do this all the time with my paintings, it can be applied to this as well.

Don't be afraid to listen to all ideas that come to the table, approach it with an open mind. This Workshop is for learning and playing with new equipment, ideas, experiences, and stories. There is always something to learn in a collaboration, don't be afraid of the opportunity to learn. Also, no one likes an insufferable no it all.

Don't insult your work before it is finished, seriously, what a downer. I have to cite something specific that was said in my group: We're just polishing up a turd at this point. Um...no...but if you go into the art of creation with that being your focus well...then it will be a turd.

Not everyone in the group can be a leader. Ever heard the saying "too many cooks in the kitchen"? Well it applies to this lesson. Often when too many people are trying to lead a project or discussion, you get into a place where something that should be a simple process turns into a chaotic mess.

Things I liked:

I liked meeting new people in this field. Networking is an awesome thing and I love making new connections and acquaintances.

Going into the field. Whether in a learning environment or for work, I love love LOVE going into the field to capture footage. This above all was my favorite.

Talking over ideas/brainstorming.  While we did struggle through some of this portion as a group, we had fun.

The mentors. Also a great opportunity to network with people in the field and make new connections, but also our mentor was a pretty cool guy and was an excellent resource for knowledge. Due to some differences in personality when it came to our group, I feel his talents were under utilized but he offered as much as he could and stayed with us through the long hours of the editing process that evening. I salute you sir and thanks for the book! :)

The feedback. I felt the feedback was useful and allowed me to go back and think of how things could have been done differently and how to handle a future project of that magnitude. Thanks to the judges for their notes and remarks.

Sold my first painting!

Yes I have finally sold a painting. Guided it was a commissioned piece and not one of the ones you've seen here but still feels pretty awesome!

Let me know what you all think! :)

Hello!

Hello!

Its been quite a while since I last posted. I have so much work and art and writing and EVERYTHING else to catch up on.

Its just been such a great busy wonderful spring I have been more interested in just living life day to day and not dedicating the time needed to all that I love to do. All of my passions, hobbies, callings and so forth.

Today I simply write for the sake of writing. I do need to post some things in relation to the DC Shoot Off I did last month. They have posted my group's Video and its time it was shared with all of you.

The next is that I found an old story I produced back in 2008 so I need to post that link.

I also sold my VERY first painting EVER! Way to go 2013!!!

Life is wonderful!

My son soon starts summer vacation. I have been learning more and more both in my personal as well as professional life.

Life in general is awesome. So with out further ado, I will post what I have stated I will post in the moments, hours, days, or whatever that follow.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Have a wonderful Tuesday!! :)

DC Shoot Off Video Workshop

Good Morning and what a lovely Friday it is!

Today is day two of the DC Shoot Off Video Workshop and I can't help but to feel excited.

Yesterday we had some great speakers that included Bill Gentile (The Backpack Journalist), Richard Harrington (who is recognizable from Lynda.com), and Bethany Swain (worked as a photojournalist for CNN).

Great stuff. Today is the day we find out who our team members are, the theme of this years workshop, and start working from this afternoon until Sunday morning . Can't wait to get started!

And what a beautiful day to start on. :)

Enjoy your Friday!
